National Pet Day 2024
National Pet Day is celebrated by many countries on April 11th, while April is also National Pet Month. This is the month that we celebrate the animals in our lives that make our lives better. But as much as we celebrate the benefits that our pets bring to us, we can take April 11th to do something extra special for them. Hence, this is another day to spoil our pets rotten!
It’s a holiday to celebrate our special best friends – be it your dog, cat, bunny, reptile, or some other lovely creature. For us, dogs rule the roost. They bring us so much joy, love, and laughs. They never let us down, act as our perma-shrink and stick by our side through thick and thin. National Pet Day is also a friendly reminder to adopt your pet from your local animal shelter, not buy them from a pet store or breeder. It is the most important day of the year for thanking our animals as they provide us with endless amounts of love and cuddles.
History
National Pet Day was founded in 2005 by Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, she was a pet, family, and lifestyle expert and writer, who has also founded National Dog Day, along with National Cat Day. The point of this day is to actively celebrate the awesomeness that pets bring into our lives each and every day. She wants to create awareness about all the animals that are waiting to become pets as they wait for forever homes in shelters. The day creates “public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues around the world”.
Pet ownership can boost your health and your social life. If you have a pet, celebrate National Pet Day with them. Make them cupcakes or special treats, buy them a new toy, go for an extra-long walk, give them a massage or give them a hug and tell them how much you love them. Now that’s how you celebrate a holiday!
Ways to celebrate Pet Day
1. Consider adopting a pet from your local shelter or animal rescue league.
2. How about a new haircut and grooming? Pets need a bath but some even like to be treated to grooming.
3. Support your local shelter by volunteering to care for the animals.
4. Donate food and other supplies to a favorite animal welfare organization.
5. Find something fun for the pet to do, whether it’s going for a walk or pulling out a playful toy.
6. Maybe pet a few dogs on Apr. 11, or make a donation to an animal adoption agency, or tell your pets how much you love them.
