Kalratri | Navratri Day 7

The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Kalratri, she has the most terrifying appearance of Durga and is believed to be the most aggressive and fiercest among Navadurga. She has a dark complexion and a fearless posture. Her large red eyes, open red tongue, and sobre on hand violently demolish devils and monsters. She is also glorified with the name “Kali Maa“.

Devi Kalratri has three round eyes, and scattered long black hairs. She wears a bead that gleams like a fire of electric power. Durga manifested herself as a complete destroyer of the dirt and demons from existence. She is revered by the name Kalratri because she represents herself as the death of Kaal appeared like a dark night for demons. This form of Goddess is believed to be the destroyer of all demon entities, ghosts, spirits, and negative energies, who flee upon knowing of her arrival.

She rides on Shava (dead body). She holds a sharp sword in her right hand while her lower hand is in a blessing gesture. The burning torch (Mashal) is in her left hand and her lower left hand is in a fearless gesture by which she makes her devotees fearless. She is known as “Shubhamkari” in her auspicious state.

The story of Maa Kalratri in English

Once there were two demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha, who invaded devaloka and defeated the demigods. Indra the ruler of the gods, along with the demigods went to the Himalayas to get Lord Shiva’s help in retrieving their abode. Together, they prayed to Goddess Parvati. Parvati heard their prayer while she was bathing, so she created another goddess, Chandi, or Ambika to help the gods by killing the demons. On the battlefield when Chanda-Munda who was sent by Shumbha and Nishumbha, came to battle Chandi, she created a dark Goddess Kali or Kaalratri. Kali killed them, thus acquiring the name Chamunda.

Thereupon, a demon named Raktabija arrived. Raktabija had the boon that if any drop of blood of his fell onto the ground, a clone of him would be created. When Kaalratri attacked him, his spilled blood gave rise to several clones of him. As such, it became impossible to defeat him. During the battle, furious Kaalratri attacked him and immediately drank his blood to prevent it from falling down. She thus killed Raktveej and helped goddess Chandi kill Shumbha and Nishumbha! This way, they gave back the demigods a safe place to live.

Kali was so much raged that she killed whoever came in the way, scared to death, the gods prayed shiva to calm her down. Soon Shiva appeared before her and lay down to get run over by her feet. Seeing her beloved husband beneath her foot, she felt embarrassed and was calm down.

Maa Kalratri Ki Katha
