World Water Day – 22nd March
World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March every year to increase focus on the importance of freshwater and the need for water conservation. The day is used to highlight the sustainable management of freshwater resources and inspire people around the world to learn more about water-related issues and to improve them. The day is celebrated to increase people’s attention towards the importance of water in various walks of life, including environment, health, agriculture, and trade.
The first World Water Day was celebrated in 1993 by United Nation, after it was officially decided in 1992 at the “United Nations Conference on Environment and Development” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and since then every year the day is celebrated with a different theme. The UN-Water selects a theme for each year that shares an interest in that year’s focus.
The theme for World Water Day 2023 was ‘Accelerate Change‘. How is water important to your home and family life, your livelihood, your cultural practices, your wellbeing, your local environment?
Water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth and is critical to the survival of all living organisms. Out of total water present on Earth, 96% is saline water of oceans and the rest is fresh water that is usable by living things on Earth.
Water has the power to unlock education, create economic potential, and improve health. Access to safe water empowers women in Peru with time to work, kids in Ethiopia with time for school, and families in India and around the world with bright days.
Since the first celebrations in 1993, World Water Day has addressed a number of issues related to water – urban challenges, water quality, transboundary resources, sanitation, water scarcity, disasters, health, etc. – and has involved hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Every year thousands of events are organized on all five continents to celebrate World Water Day.
On this auspicious day, all of us should vow that we will save water from being polluted in any way. We will take care of your environment. Water has the power to change lives. You do too. Give the power of water to people living without it.
